Pakistan Launches its First Communication Satellite Paksat-1R

Finally Pakistan has launched its first communication satellite with the help of China.

Earlier it was expected that Pakistan will launch its satellite in second week of August, preferably on 14^th of August but keeping in view the weather factors, the launch has taken place.

Paksat-1R is based on DFH-4 platform and will be positioned at 38.0 degrees East. Paksat-1R will replace Paksat-1 which was launched on January 31^st, 1996. The DFH-4 (DongFangHong-4) platform is a large telecommunications satellite platform –

UET Lahore Student Designs Solar Powered Vehicle

Student of Mechanical Engineering from University of Engineering & Technology, Pakistan has successfully built a solar powered vehicle – named Solaron.

This eco-friendly vehicle incorporates a battery that is charged by solar panels thereby producing energy without any exhaust. Battery drives a DC motor that is used to power the vehicle.

Vehicle is based on reverse trike configuration i.e. two front wheels and one rear wheel which is powered by motor whereas steering is done with the help of front wheels. (See video below for demonstration)

Farrukh Khan, the guy who made this vehicle, says that most of the parts used in this vehicle are from old bicycle, including tires and shock absorbers whereas framework is custom built, made from aluminum to make it weight effective.

Rare white Kiwi hatches

Wellington – A white kiwi chick was born at a New Zealand wildlife centre, the first of its kind to hatch in captivity, a news report said on Tuesday.

The chick – named Manukura, which means “of chiefly status” in the Maori language – hatched at the Pukaha Mount Bruce centre, 130km north of Wellington, from an egg laid by a normal brown kiwi transferred from an island.

The wildlife centre engages in a species conservation programme that takes kiwis from the wild to breed chicks that are then hand-reared before being returned to their natural habitat when they are old enough to keep themselves safe from predators.

The chicks are normally released when they weigh about 1kg, Chris Lester, area manager with the Department of Conservation, told the New Zealand Press Association. He said extra care would need to be taken with Manukura because he could be more vulnerable in the bush.

“As far as we know, this is the first all-white chick to be hatched in captivity,” said Bob Francis, chair of the centre’s board, which is keen for as many visitors as possible to see it when it is weighed and fed daily.

BEIJING – China has opened the world’s longest cross-sea bridge.

The Jiaozhou Bay bridge is 26 miles (42 kilometers) long and links China’s eastern port city of Qingdao to the island of Huangdao.

State-run CCTV says the 110-foot (35-meter)-wide bridge is the longest of its kind and cost more than 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion).

The bridge is supported by more than 5,000 pillars and was built in four years, is expected to carry more than 30,000 cars per day, and opened for traffic on Thursday.

Guinness World Records says the previous record holder for a bridge over water is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana. The Chinese bridge is more than 4 KM (2.5 miles) longer.

Can Non-Muslims Be Made Friends?

I will let you know about the more popular traditional view on the subject first, and then mention why that view is not acceptable to me. Finally you will get my understanding on the subject.

A) The Popular View
Verse 5:51 of Qur'an has been translated thus: "O believers! Take neither Jews nor Christians as your protecting friends (auliya): they are only protecting friends of one another. Whoever of you disobeys this commandment will be counted as one of them. Surely Allah does not guide the wrongdoers."

Mawlana Shabbir Ahmad Usmani mentions in his Tafsir while explaining the above-translated verse thus:

"Aulia is the plural of wali. Wali means a friend, some one close, as well as a helper. What it means is that Muslims are expected not to make Jews, Christians, and all other disbelievers (kuffar) their protecting friends, as has been clarified in surah Nisaa. However, to deal with them with justice, politeness, generosity, and decency is quite another matter. If believers feel it to be necessary, they can have agreements of peace with all disbelievers, as has been mentioned in verse 8: 61. Justice is meant to be done in case of all humans, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. The attitude of politeness and decency can be demonstrated for those non-Muslims who are not antagonistic towards Muslims. However, as far as Muwalaat (i.e. confidence of friendship and brotherly help and support) is concerned, no Muslim has a right to establish it with any non-Muslim."

B) My Reservations
I have quite a few problems when I try to rationally understand this point of view in the light of Qur'anic teachings. I will just mention a few of them here:

1. Qur'an allows Muslim men to marry Jew and Christian ladies: "Likewise, marriage with chaste free believing women and also chaste women among the People who were given the Book before you is made lawful for you." (5:5) It also tells believing men to be good to their wives : "Treat them with kindness even if you dislike them; it is quite possible that you dislike something in which Allah has placed much good." (4:19) It also tells us that good wives are the ones that have the following attributes: "Honorable women are, therefore, devoutly obedient and guard in the husband's absence what Allah requires them to guard (their husband's property and their own honor)." (4:34) The Almighty mentions the closeness of the husband-wife relationship in many different ways. For instance, Qur'an says: "And of His signs, another one is that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may find comfort with them" (30: 21) He also says "They (your wives) are an apparel for you and you for them. " (2:187)
