Rare white Kiwi hatches

white rare kiwi chick

Wellington – A white kiwi chick was born at a New Zealand wildlife centre, the first of its kind to hatch in captivity, a news report said on Tuesday.

The chick – named Manukura, which means “of chiefly status” in the Maori language – hatched at the Pukaha Mount Bruce centre, 130km north of Wellington, from an egg laid by a normal brown kiwi transferred from an island.

The wildlife centre engages in a species conservation programme that takes kiwis from the wild to breed chicks that are then hand-reared before being returned to their natural habitat when they are old enough to keep themselves safe from predators.

The chicks are normally released when they weigh about 1kg, Chris Lester, area manager with the Department of Conservation, told the New Zealand Press Association. He said extra care would need to be taken with Manukura because he could be more vulnerable in the bush.

“As far as we know, this is the first all-white chick to be hatched in captivity,” said Bob Francis, chair of the centre’s board, which is keen for as many visitors as possible to see it when it is weighed and fed daily.

White Lions of South Africa - Rare Animals

The white lion is occasionally found in wildlife reserves in South Africa and is a rare color mutation of the Kruger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri). It has been perpetuated by selective breeding in zoos around the world. White lions are not a separate subspecies and they have never been common in the wild. Regarded as divine by locals, white lions first came to public attention in the 1970s in Chris McBride’s book The White Lions of Timbavati. The greatest population of white lions is in zoos where they are deliberately bred for color. The population of the white lion is unknown but the most recent count was in 2004 and 30 were alive. White lions are not albino lions. Instead, the white color is caused by a recessive gene known as chinchilla or color inhibitor. They vary from blonde through to near white, however some can also be red. This coloration gives white lions a distinct disadvantage in nature because they are highly visible. This gives them away to their prey and makes them an attractive target for hunters. According to Linda Tucker, in “Mystery of the White Lions – Children of the Sun God” they are bred in camps in South Africa as trophies for canned hunts.

Take a look at the rarest animals in the world!
The Maltese Tiger:

The Blue tiger was reported mostly from the Fujian Province of China, being characterized by a bluish fur with dark stripes. The Maltese tigers have been reported as a subspecies of the South Chinese tiger, that is critically endangered. A blue tiger cub was born in 1964, in the Oklahoma Zoo, but died in its infancy. There are no blue tigers in zoos or private collections, and no known blue tiger pelts.
