For something a little different, try a women's only fly fishing adventure!
Where: Millbrook Lakes fly fishery, Millbrook, Victoria
Feelgood facts: Pulling on waders and casting a fly into the water might not be everyone's idea of glamour, but this elite sport of the fishing world is gaining an increasing number of followers.
"Part of the appeal, why presidents and rock stars and people who lead intense, interesting lives enjoy fly fishing, is because it's totally absorbing," explains Philip Weigall, journalist, author and fly fishing instructor at Millbrook Lakes fly fishery, which has 12 trout-filled lakes in a quiet valley near Ballarat. "It's challenging, it forces you to forget about the worries of everyday life. You become absorbed in working out where the fish are, what they're eating, where the fly lands." And all of this takes place in a spectacular setting, where the only sounds to distract you are growling koalas, croaking frogs and splashing trout.
"By their nature, the fish that fly fishers catch, like trout and tuna and Murray cod, tend to live in beautiful places," he adds. "You've come to catch fish, but then you look around and realise you're in this gob-smackingly beautiful rainforest!"
And while it might not be an intuitive choice for a girls' weekend, Weigall says fly fishing is a growing trend among women, who are naturals: "Women grasp the elegance and subtlety of fly fishing much earlier than men. They seem to innately understand that brute force isn't necessarily the best way to achieve a result." Which is why Millbrook Lakes is encouraging women-only groups.
It's good for: Reducing stress.
Essential info: A weekend costs $495 per person and includes lakeside lodge accommodation, fly fishing tuition, kit and meals.
